Training Courses

Thank you for a fantastic day. This event is one of the best CPD events I have attended. (Delegate, Reading Rocks South West, February 2019)

The staff meeting the other night was absolutely fantastic (made me wish I was still in the classroom to try them out!) INSET, Seaford Primary, October 2018

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for your session and support on Monday. The feedback from the day has been really positive and it feels like we have done a lot to create a much needed team feel within the school. (INSET, October 2018, Iford and Kingston School)

(Year 5 and 6 Teacher Network Meeting March 2018) I wish we’d had this course when I was teaching year 6 last year – teacher, Willingdon Primary School

Thank you Mark, for the company on a very productive afternoon and the resources!  Good discussion points for hopefully some inspired writing. (Year 4 teacher Network June 2018)

(A selection of feedback from the Uckfield Alliance, GDS Writing and Mindfulness, January 2018)

Thank you for today! I found the meditation within lessons useful as I haven’t had this covered.

Thank you for actually explaining what mindfulness is.

Thank you – a very interesting INSET and it felt relevant to me embarking on my training placement.

Fabulous! Loved both sessions. Lots of great ideas to take away and try.

I liked the way the slides combined various elements e.g. Thinking Maps and hats – linking to writing, the WRITER sequence and mindfulness.

Practical ideas to take back into the classroom.

Found the content of this INSET very interesting.

Very thought provoking training.

Great session the other day – lots of useful ideas. (Teacher, Westfield Primary – Thinking Spelling course, November 2017)

Thank you so much for the training today. Once again, you’ve shared a whole stack of ideas we can use straight away in class – and it’s great to have all the resources. (delegate Thinking Spelling course)

Hi Mark, thank you for the training yesterday. My teachers loved it and found it so useful. (Head teacher, Manor Primary School)

It turned out to be a very useful course 😊 Mark had absolutely loads of advice and suggestions.  (Thinking Spelling Delegate, Willingdon Primary School)

Our year 5 and 6 teachers were buzzing when they returned from your network meeting. (Deputy Headteacher, Cradle Hill, September 2017)

R came back buzzing from your training yesterday. (Headteacher, Nutley)

Many fantastic tips on embedding spelling practice and drafting and editing. A variety of activities to embed spelling and grammar even further.   The practical activities to use in class. Small but vital spelling/grammar/editing games with dice. Hands on experience. Games and ideas. Ideas for spelling and grammar activities. All so practical -thank you! (feedback from Writing Well in Key Stage 2 July 2017)

We loved the spelling and sentences activities! (Year 6 team, All Saints, Achieving High Standards Through Mastery course)

An excellent day – thanks you! One of the best I have been to. (Rodmell teacher, Achieving High Standards Through Mastery course)

Superb ideas to try out. extremely useful. (Year 6 teacher, St. John’s Primary)

It was so useful in many ways: the exercises were valuable and thought-provoking, the discussions  helped with realising new options and ways forward (with KS4 curriculum/exams etc) the learning walks in the three schools who were kind enough to act as venues were very illuminating   All in all I would say it is one of the most beneficial and worthwhile courses I have attended. (English teacher Claverham School, SEEKs 4 course)

Thank you very much for your presentation and workshop at our conference on 12th November, Sussex University. Personally I felt there was a real buzz during the day. (Course organiser)

Thank you so much – it was a fabulous and very useful day. (delegate on Reading course)

Thank you so much for yesterday Mark – it was really enjoyable and so helpful. The feedback from the staff was great. (Headteacher, Fletching)

In-school support

I just wanted to drop you a quick email to thank you for letting me observe you today in Year 3 (not that you had any choice in the matter!) It was inspirational watching you in action, having the children eating out of the palm of your hands and I came away buzzing and eager to put your strategies into practice. Having watched you earlier in the morning, the other Year 4 teacher went straight to the computer and planned a Reading lesson based on yours for next week for us to use– can’t wait to try it out myself! (Class teacher, Chyngton School, March 2019

Mark has been working with Chyngton school regularly since September 2018. His passion for improving reading outcomes shines through all his work with children from his meticulous planning to his clear subject knowledge and high expectations of what children can achieve with the right support. In particular, Mark has distilled into his lessons the learning skills that children need to acquire in order to demonstrate their understanding of different texts, from contextualising unfamiliar vocabulary through to inferring motivations of characters and authorial intent. Our children look forward to his lessons and enjoy the challenge that he provides. Mark has also provided high quality training to all teaching staff, particularly those he has been regularly working alongside. (Headteacher, Chyngton School)

I am really enjoying your English sessions and am learning so much! I really feel my teaching has improved as a result (particularly in reading) and, consequently, I am enjoying teaching English so much more! (Year 6 teacher, Pevensey and Westham School, October 2018)

Thanks for your sessions today Mark! We’re seeing such enthusiasm and progress in our children from these! (Reading Support-Year 6 teacher- Chyngton School, October 2018)

My class LOVE ‘spelling snooker’ – they can’t get enough of it and we combine it with a mile a day so children are spelling when exercising. (Senior Leader – Willingdon)

Thank you so much for your inspirational staff meeting on Tuesday.

I’m delighted that you’ve been able to come in and galvanise the staff. Have mentioned you in our newsletter and will be promoting your work with all the Heads within East Grinstead. I am very keen to  plan opportunities for you to work alongside our staff teams – you are exactly what they need.

(Headteacher, East Grinstead January 2018)

Lots of positive feedback from parents at parents’ evening this week about your intervention. (year 6 teacher, Cradle Hill – guided writing  groups and Greater Depth Masterclasses)

(Beckley Headteacher September 2017) Just want to say again, how excellent you were yesterday. The sessions were so well thought through and linked to real, practical application in the classroom.  The ideas and resources you shared with and have given to us are superb. You have inspired my staff and given us a great launch pad to develop more of a thinking, reflective and pupil-led culture across the school which I am convinced will have a really positive impact on learning and progress.

Many thanks once again for all your help moral support at …. The class are now in much better shape, being much more focussed and less disruptive. Your advice on rewarding good behaviour was put to good effect, and yesterday the class had their celebration for reaching the last rung on the ladder reward system. The writing has improved overall, with something to build on for 2017. We also gave them last year’s SPAG and reading tests, and the results were very promising. The reading in particular, looked good, and your approach, which we adopted after your demo lessons, certainly seems to be paying off. (teacher, Eastbourne)

My year 5 class

has thoroughly enjoyed learning through this writing project. The focus on different aspects of grammar and the range of writing activities have supported and extended the children’s learning in a truly positive way. (Year 5 teacher Rock’s Park)

I spoke to the Head at Holy Cross today and he was full of praise for your work there. Really impacted on all staff. (SLES manager)

The best INSET I’ve attended. (Humanities teacher, Hailsham Community College)

I understand you came into Hailsham Community College recently to delivery an INSET on extended answers for History and Geography. This was very well received. (Senior manager, Hailsham Community College)

Thank you for taking the time to shed some light in a very long dark tunnel.(recently appointed English Subject Leader)

Thanks very much for your input, the children have enjoyed working with you.  I know (the teacher) has found your systematic approach very useful to use in class as well and we know this will assist the children in securing level EXS over the next few months. (Headteacher, Grovelands)

…. and I both felt the meeting was extremely positive and supportive, so thank you very much for your professional conduct. (Headteacher at a Category 4 school following OFSTED)

Thank you so much for the INSET on Monday. I think it left staff feeling inspired. (Senior leader, Frant)

I just wanted to write to say a huge thank you for all of your help and support of everyone at ……..this term. You have gone above and beyond with what you have put in with us over the past few weeks.(Deputy Headteacher, Hastings)

Impact On Standards

(Following in-school coaching on spelling) The pupils are starting to talk differently about words, the spelling in writing is improving and they are doing better in tests. (teacher – Scaynes Hill)

Hi Mark, just a quick email to say thank you so much for your amazing spelling games that you gave us at the last session. They have had a huge impact on the enjoyment and attainment of spelling within my class and other teachers have seen the positive changes so adopted these too – a fantastic tool!! (Year 4 teacher, Hastings)

(Year 4 teacher, Hastings, January 2018, following WRITER Sequence training)  Everything is going really well. I’m getting some great writing from them.

(Year 4 pupils starting to think differently and more independently about words, following some Spellzone training)

“This week, the children have been referring to or asking about the spelling zone when practising their weekly spellings.

They also asked if they could use it for practising unknown words, so I hope that’s a promise to future learning!

(Year 4 teacher, Rocks Park)

We just wanted to send a quick email to say a very big THANK YOU for all your support with our reading this year. The change in teaching strategies and development of reading skills based on your advice has clearly paid off!  We are very pleased and thankful for our reading results this year. We could not have done it without you! (Year 6 teachers, Pevensey)

The impact is impressive. The rate of improvement for cohort schools was above that of all East Sussex schools in all target areas.  Overall attainment for programme schools exceeded the East Sussex average in reading, writing and mathematics and exceeded national averages in each of the separate subjects.(SLES manager on targeted intervention programme)

Excellent and engaging tasks for children. The sports-related aspect was very appealing to my last class, who found the sports report very exciting to create. (Year 5 teacher, Chailey – Sid’s Big Write Project. The following year, participating pupils outperfomed their year 6 peers by 12% in writing)

The resources you sent made spelling lessons fun and the children enjoyed learning the rules of spelling in a more engaging and memorable way. We still need to keep plugging the gaps and misconceptions but your resources will help us to do this in a fun way! (Thinking Spelling resources – year 4/5 teacher, Holy Cross, Uckfield)

Leadership Support

You have worked tirelessly towards the targets set …and have continued to keep teaching and learning at the heart of everything you do. Your professionalism and commitment to the school has never been in doubt. (Headteacher Performance Management)

The staff has never known such clarity. (Chair of Governors, East Sussex)

The additional capacity you provided took a weight off my shoulders. (Interim Headteacher, East Sussex)

I have really enjoyed the last four weeks working under Mark’s leadership and guidance. (colleague, Firle)

There have been significant improvements to the curriculum and the quality of teaching and learning, particularly in Key Stage 2. (SIP visit report 2017)
